Gifts to One Another, Created for God

Written by admin

Imagine a beautifully planted garden, with trees, bushes, flowers, and fruit. Perhaps there is a stream running through it, and a meadow. God creates a man. He then takes a rib from Adam and handcrafts a woman who is a perfect companion, one fit for Adam. Imagine as they get acquainted, and thank God for the many gifts He has given!

Rooted in this true story are two unchanging principles. God brought these two people together and gave them to one another. Underlying that as a foundation, as it were, is the truth that they were created by and for God. I invite you to interact with a study coach as we consider how those truths can impact your marriage.

1. How did Adam and Eve get here? What impresses you about their first home? Read Genesis 2. How do you think Adam responded when he saw Eve? How do you think Eve may have felt as she saw Adam? More thoughts...
This account tells about the first home, first family. Sometimes people wonder about how Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 fit together. Genesis 2 retells what had already been shared in Genesis 1 about the sixth day. It is far more detailed about the creation of man and woman.
2. In what ways were Adam and Eve a gift from God to one another?
3. Sometimes we find ourselves acknowledging God’s gifts, but maybe thinking that they’re not such good gifts after all. Read Genesis 3. How did Adam respond to God’s question (verse 12)? How do you think this made Eve feel? How do you think God felt? More thoughts...
Sometimes others seem to put us down. How do you respond when someone puts you down? This account makes it clear that Adam blamed both God and Eve for his choices, rather than taking personal responsibility.
4. Both Adam and Eve had disobeyed God’s instruction. What provision did God make for them? More thoughts...
We too have disobeyed God’s instructions and have gone our own way. How do you think God responds to you at those times? What provision has He made for you?
5. Can you identify ways in which God has created you differently than the man you love? In what ways is he a gift to you?
6. How has God crafted you into a gift for your man? Are you willing and able to bring “all of you” to the marriage? More thoughts...
Many women find some area that they have difficulty in bringing into the marriage. Maybe it’s something you don’t like about yourself, or something that has happened to you. It could be some choice you made in the past. If this is the case for you, you may wish to share a bit of that here, or find a wise woman you trust who can help you deal with that, even now. God wants to help you and your marriage, even through the hard stuff.
7. How do you respond to the truth that you have been created by and for God? More thoughts...
Does this truth challenge you? Is it a comfort? Is it a new thought for you?
8. Is there a practical way that you can celebrate your differences this week? Is there some word of affirmation you can share with this man about how God has created him? More thoughts...
Your words can be a huge encouragement or a major discouragement to those you love. If you feel awkward speaking words of affirmation, maybe you could take time to write a note, sharing two or three things you appreciate about him.
