Giving: How to Give Cheerfully

Do you ever feel anxious when the collection plate or bag comes around?

Paul somewhat surprisingly tells us that “You must each make up your own mind as to how much you should give.” Not only that, but giving should be joyful, not forced: “Don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves the person who gives cheerfully” (2 Corinthians 9:7, NLT).

Jesus spoke often about money. According to author Randy Alcorn, about 15% of Jesus’ sayings recorded in the Bible relate to money and possessions. We are not saved in any way by our good works (“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works”, Ephesians 2:8-9), but doing good, including giving back a portion of what God has graciously given us, is the natural outcome of true faith (James 2:15-17).

Why did Jesus speak frequently about money? Perhaps because we seem to have so much trouble using money wisely. Thankfully, the New Testament gives us plenty of guidance. Take this study to discover what God’s word has to teach us about giving.

1. Why do you think Jesus spent so much time talking about money and possessions? More thoughts...
In Jesus, the fullness of God dwells in a human form (Colossians 2:9) so Jesus would be able to anticipate our needs. What seems to be one of the main focuses of society today?
2. Do you sometimes feel guilty for not giving enough? Why or why not? More thoughts...
Read 2 Corinthians 8:12. What does Paul say about how much we give?
3. Read Mark 12:41-44. What was Jesus appraisal of the woman's seemingly meager contribution? More thoughts...
Although the woman gave what was worth "only a fraction of a penny", Jesus notes that she gave "more than all the rest". How is that possible?
4. "God loves the person who gives cheerfully" (2 Corinthians 9:7) What does this mean to you? More thoughts...
Is the act we do the most important thing, or is it the condition of our hearts as we do it?
5. What are our responsibilities or distractions that prevent you from giving wholeheartedly to God? More thoughts...
Many of these may apply to your particular situation: Work, school, family, friends, financial debt, illness, selfishness, skepticism. Which specifically apply to you the most?
6. What are some reasons that we should keep our giving private, between us and God? More thoughts...
Read Matthew 6:1-4. What does this tell us about the way that we handle our giving?
7. Forgetting ourselves for a moment, what should our attitude be towards how much other people give? More thoughts...
Jesus warns us not to judge others. (Matthew 7:1-5) This doesn't mean we can never judge, but if we do feel the need to criticize, we should be sure to examine our own lives first.
8. Even if we have little money, what other ways, besides money, can we give? More thoughts...
Giving can be about so much more than just money. Think about how your unique talents could allow you to give something special, and how you might be able to use your time effectively to do it.
