Soul Cravings: Intimacy

Love is more powerful than hate,” yet many struggle with the thought of love. It can be a great delight to feel loved, yet when we are unable to find or maintain the love we crave, we’re left deeply wounded. Do you crave intimacy? Do you desire to be loved for who you are, apart from what you do? In this study we will look at one of our core desires, to be loved.

1. Where do people turn for a sense of belonging? More thoughts...
How important is it to you to belong to something, to be connected to a group or another person?
2. How would you define or describe “true love”? More thoughts...
How do people seek to fill their desire to be loved? What do we trade “for love”? Is such a trade worth it in the end?
3. Have you ever felt accepted, not for what you’ve done, but for who you are? If so, can you share briefly about that experience?
4. Love is always a risk, is it always dangerous? Has love ever left you gutted? More thoughts...
“I have never found a way to live this life avoiding pain. I have yet to find a path that leads to both intimacy and the absence of disappointment.“ Erwin McManus continues, “The miracle of intimacy is not that it’s the safest place in the world. It’s that it’s such a dangerous place, and yet we choose to go there because a life without love is no life at all.”
5. What would it mean for you if you were convinced that God loves you unconditionally? More thoughts...
Erwin says, “Love moves God to you. In a sense, only love can move you to God.” See 1 John 4:19, “We love because He first loved us.”
6. Do you see God as a reluctant lover? Do you feel that you need to measure up to be loved?
7. Do you worry that God will let you down if you love him? Has God let you down before?
8. Can anything separate us from God’s love? Can anything prevent us from feeling His love? More thoughts...
Romans 8:38-39 NIV “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
