Women of Faith: Hagar

Written by W Smith

Early in our journey through the Bible, we glimpse a very interesting household. Abram, Sarai and other members of their family moved from Ur without knowing exactly where they were going. God spoke to Abram, making what had to seem like outlandish promises, including the promise of an heir. Both Abram and Sarai were old, well past the normal age of childbearing, and still had no children. Let’s recount some of the story found in Genesis. Notice especially those portions related to Hagar in Genesis 16 and 21. (You may study Sarah at greater length in another lesson.)

1. What was Hagar’s status in Abraham’s household?
2. Hagar made Sarah angry on at least two occasions. What brought on this anger?
3. How did Hagar react to her two exiles from Abraham’s household and Sarah’s presence (Genesis 16 and Genesis 21)? More thoughts...
Were there similarities between the two events? Were there differences?
4. How do you feel about Hagar? Why?
5. How do you feel about Sarah in her responses to Abraham and Hagar? Why?
6. Have you ever felt that you, like Hagar, were taken for granted? Taken advantage of? How did you react?
7. Even though she didn’t know Him, how did God reveal or make Himself known to Hagar? In Genesis 16:13, what does Hagar say about God? How might this truth apply to your life today?
8. How has God made Himself known to you in times of distress or difficulty?
9. What key insights about God can you carry with you this week? How might they change your perspective on the days ahead?
10. What other insights, questions or comments do you have about this study? How may we pray for you? More thoughts...
If you’d like further study about another lady who faced thirst, consider reading John 4. How did Jesus respond to her need? The documentary at http://powertochange.com/itv/spirituality/crave-the-documentary/ also addresses how God designs us with cravings that can lead us to an intimate relationship with Himself.

    Hi Jamie,

What a lovely prayer! I hope you don’t mind that I copied it, will print and laminate so I can have it with me always. I look forward to the day when I will have fully memorised it and can just say it wherever and whenever I am. Will also give a copy to each of my children. Having come across it at the start of the day is God’s wonderful way of reminding me that He is always there, that He never abandoned me even during those times when I felt so alone.

May you continue living your life as a testimony to God’s miraculous power and limitless love!

    God bless,
    Soph

I have 4 adult daughters and none are saved.I’ve been saved just 5 year this month myself. My heart is torn and full of pain for my children. They get very angry with me if I try to tell them about Jesus. Also the 4 of them don’t all get along with each other(they hold onto gruges), and this Mother’s Day instead of all of us being together it was seperated…everything turned out fine, but not having them all together was alittle heavy on the heart. Besides I was missing my mom too who is in heaven.I pray for my daughters and other losted ones out there….why are things looking worse then better and why does it seem that my girls are pulling away more? I know God said He would not give more then we could bare, but it’s a day past Mother’s Day and I feel so down, crushed and defeated. Blessings,Deise

Lord God I do pray for Patricia and her family. I pray that You would provide for them out of Your abundance exactly in the way that accomplishes Your purpose and plan in their lives. I pray that Patricia would be a woman whose faith is firmly rooted in You. Guard her from discouragement. Guard her from discontent but give her joy in knowing You and in serving those whom You bring into her life. I pray for her friend Ellie. Guide her into knowing You better, loving You more deeply and serving others cheerfully. Let her life be a testimony to many others of Your miraculous power and limitless love. Amen.

  • I love these online Bible studies because I am poor and have no money. Please
pray for me and my family and my friend Ellie. She needs guidance also.
