“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled”  (Matthew 5:6).

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35).

A group of Christian women sat around a table in their Bible study class. Each of these women was mature in her faith, regularly involved in church and community service, and consistently growing in understanding of what it means to be a Christ-follower. And then Bev’s voice was heard: “I want more!”

Hunger – an experience with several meanings. For those starving people with empty bellies and no prospect of filling them, hunger is far more than a feeling of desire. I believe it is to those with a spiritual hunger that Jesus’ bread-of-life words are addressed. These people experience a gnawing emptiness—and perhaps have even tried a variety of satisfactions and found them wanting. To them, Jesus simply offers Himself as that which will give them life and hope.

But then there is Bev, and many like her. She regularly feeds upon the Bread of Life—the Word of God—but it seems that with each delectable morsel, the desire for more grows. She can hardly wait to experience an ever growing intimacy with the Father, coming to His prepared table each morning with delightful hunger for more. And to this one Jesus promises, “you will be filled!”

What is your notion of following Christ? Doesn’t it basically boil down to obeying Christ?

The disciples enjoyed the company of Christ Himself for three years. They were able to converse with Him and receive an audible answer. They were able to see Him and touch Him. But we also have the benefit of His presence. The day before He was crucified, Christ promised the disciples that He would not leave them alone in this fallen world. He pledged to send them a Helper, the Holy Spirit, to guide them into all truth.

The Holy Spirit indeed reveals to us the truth of Christ in any and all circumstances. He enables us to walk in the way that He reveals, and He also corrects our course when we stray.
God’s way is not the world’s way. Satan controls this evil world system and attempts to camouflage circumstances to confuse people. But the Holy Spirit is our sure compass and always responds to our prayers and faith.

If you are a believer attempting to walk closely with Christ, you can be sure that the Holy Spirit will place a “check” within your spirit when confronted with a situation or decision that would take you outside the will of God. What you do next will influence how well you continue to follow Christ. Because it all boils down to obedience.

The concept of truth has fallen on hard times lately. Something I grew up assuming everybody knew existed is not a given anymore. Post-modernism has rendered truth relative to each individual, personal experience has trumped it, and fiction has cast waves of doubt upon it, but in the end, there it is. Or perhaps we should say, there he is, because Jesus is the one who said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

That would mean that John the Baptist looked at Truth when he said, “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)

Peter answered Truth, “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16)

A Samaritan woman had a conversation with Truth and said, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.” (John 4:29)

A man born blind to whom Truth had given sight, said, “Lord, I believe,” and worshiped him. (John 9:38)

The council of elders asked Truth, “Are you then the Son of God?” and Jesus replied, “You are right in saying I am.” (Luke 22:70)

And Truth said, “He who believes in me has everlasting life.” (John 6:47)

Pilate stared Truth in the face when he said, “What is truth?” (John 18:38)

A criminal hanging on a cross looked over at Truth in a similar circumstance as he and knew there was something different about this man. “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And Truth replied, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:42-43)

A Roman soldier who felt the earth shatter when Truth died, said, “Surely he was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:54)

Mary Magdalene saw the Truth alive again and said, “I have seen the Lord!” (John 20:18)
Thomas touched the wounds of Truth fresh from the grave and said, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)

And two men dressed in white said to a crowd of followers who had just seen Truth pass into the heavens, “Why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go.” (Acts 1:11)

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” (Philippians 2:9-11) In other words, everyone will eventually recognize the Truth.

And there he will be.
