Do you shop at Nature’s Fare?

We have some very exciting news of a way that you can help DRIME raise money! DRIME has entered into a partnership with Nature’s Fare, an organic grocery store with locations in British Columbia. You can click here to look for a location close to you.

This organization has graciously allowed us to become one of the charities that they support through what is called “The 3% Club.”

It works like this:

1. You shop at the store. (*You can also shop online!)

2. You send in your receipts to the DRIME office. (20385 64th Ave., Langley, BC, V2Y 1N5)

3. DRIME sends in those receipts and receives a cheque for 3% of the total amount spent and accounted for on those receipts.

4. You get what you need, and you help support DRIME in the process.

We hope that you will consider doing some of your shopping at this store (or online) to help out DRIME in this way!

Happy shopping, and thanks for partnering with us!

Are you struggling to seek God through the Christmas season? Talk to a mentor.

My wife is a list person. She loves making lists; it gives her a sense of organization. Over the holidays with gift lists, dinner lists, and event lists, she is in list heaven.

As far as gift lists are concerned, we’ve made ours, checked it at least twice, and found out again how it’s more blessed to give than to receive. Not only more blessed, but more fun as well. Think of the favorite gift you gave this year versus the favorite gift you received and which brought you greater joy?

Whenever we give, we are partaking in the nature of God. It is not naturally human to give; it is entirely God-like. If there were any value in the commercialism of Christmas, it would be this. It gets us thinking about what someone else might like for a change, and it gets us giving. We spend our money on someone else. We enter into someone else’s life; we make someone else important. And since giving is one of the things that lends purpose to our lives, it would be wise to carry over some of what we experienced this holiday season and see how we can incorporate more of this sensitivity into our daily lives—keeping in mind that giving is an attitude and an action based on it. It doesn’t have to be a material gift. It can be the gift of our time or talents—even our thoughts.

Our family loves the Christmas Carol story by Charles Dickens that we see every year in so many different forms. The contrast between being a miser and a giver is the theme of this story, and it is a part of the value of this season for me because I am a miser at heart. Being reminded every year of the joy and value of lavish giving is part of the Christmas season well worth carrying on into the next year. Satan’s lie is that the more we hold onto, the more we will have, when the opposite is the truth. The more we give away, the fuller and richer life will be. Hopefully it won’t take the visits of three ghosts to get this.

Whenever we give we are tapping into the life of God. It would be good to think about the joy of giving we experienced this Christmas and look for what of this we can carry on into the New Year. Maybe we shouldn’t stop making lists. Keep those lists going. Keep thinking along the lines of what others need. Keep thinking about how we can surprise the people we love. My wife—the list person—would like that.

Are you too busy to spend time with God? Learn how to manage your time wisely.

“He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God…” (Psalm 40:3).

As we listen to the people around us and even to our own thoughts and words, it seems that it is time to look afresh for the song in our hearts. God is the one who puts the music of hope and peace and love into our hearts and He alone enables us to navigate the twists and turns of life with true joy that is not conditional on our circumstances.

Time in His presence is the very first thing we need in finding afresh the music of our hearts.

There are also 5 simple, practical steps we can add to our days and encourage others to as we seek to lead those around us to higher ground.

L……Leisure

Make sure you schedule some leisure time for yourself. Especially in the midst of economic change it is important to look away from the pressures now and then and find some refreshing leisure activity. Get creative. Make it simple. Take the kids for a hike, cook a meal with your partner, have some friends over to play a game and laugh together, build something. Give yourself permission to take little leisure breaks. It may seem trivial to think of it now, but it can become a lifeline during stressful times. It will also help kindle the relationships that sometimes get strained with the daily challenges that face us. Plan mini breaks.

A……Affirm

Look around you and intentionally find the good. Affirm the positive things you see and hear. Negativity is so easy to slip into and it can permeate you life like smoke permeates a forest. It clouds your thinking too. Affirm your loved ones regularly. When pressures in life mount up we tend to take it out on those we love the most. Be intentional in affirming the relationships you treasure and guard them in changing times. Look for the positive.

U…..U-turns

Allow yourself the freedom of making a U turn in life. If the direction you are going needs changing then make the change necessary. If you want a different job, take an online course and begin to work in that direction. If your marriage is feeling tense read some books on relationships, plan some positive times together or get some counsel. If your body is discouraging you make a plan to eat less and move more. Concentrate on the things in life that you have the power to change and focus some energy there rather than dwelling on the things you have no power over. Change what you can.

G….Give

Find ways to give. When life gets challenging our tendency is to hoard our resources. Give of your time to help someone out; coach a kid’s team, or do some repairs around the house. Give time to listen to those you love and hear the feelings behind the words. Give encouragement. Give kindness to strangers. When you are feeling depleted, intentionally choose to give and you will be surprised at the refreshing it will bring to you. Be generous without using money.

H…..Hope

Dare to hope in tomorrow. Fan the flames of hope in your heart. When hope feels scarce dare to hope in God to give you the strength you need when the road feels hard and rough. We all need hope in something beyond ourselves. God can provide that hope and that help when we simply ask Him to join us on the road of life and walk with us. He is the ultimate source of help and He is the one who can bring hope for tomorrow. Reach out for hope.

Lord, Help me to make time to be in Your presence where You can stir a new song in my heart. Help me to be an intentional influencer in these challenging days. Use me, Lord, to help those around me find firm footing in Your strength. Help me to bring joy to my corner of the world. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Questions: What step do you need to focus on yourself today? Are you making time to be in God’s presence so He can give you a new song in your heart?

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” John 8:36

The world defines freedom as a life without any restraint – ‘I can do anything I want to do; say anything I want to say, without anybody telling me what to do.’ Everybody else may get burned by you, but you get to do it your own way. The world says you can have your freedom, but only by being totally selfish.

Yet, the Bible says the only way to true freedom is through Jesus: “If the Son sets you free, then you will be really free” (John 8:36, TEV).

Real freedom is freedom from fear, where you’re truly free from guilt, from worry, from bitterness, and from death. You’re free to quit pretending because you’re free to be yourself.

How do you get rid of those kinds of fears? By letting God love you! The apostle John teaches that, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear . . .” (1 John 4:18).

When you realize how much God loves you, you’ll begin to live in true freedom. In fact, you worship God when you recognize that “God is love.” It is an act of worship to agree that he is a loving, caring, generous God and that we can “rely on the love God has for us” (1 John 4:16)

Question: What’s the difference between freedom of the world and the real freedom that Jesus brings?

The Beatles sang a song about money …

Money don’t get everything, it’s true
What it don’t get, I can’t use
Now give me money (that’s what I want)
That’s what I want (that’s what I want)

Few people would actually take such a calloused approach to money. We’ve experienced enough to realize that money alone isn’t enough to guarantee happiness. But when we are faced with difficult moral decisions involving money, how can we balance our own desires against those of others?

A contest for university students called “Paid vs Aid” seeks to highlight the difficult choices we need to make daily, but rarely take the time to think about:

Each and every day, we make choices. We make choices about our base needs: what to eat, what to wear, how many cups of coffee we want to drink. We make choices about relationships: Who we want to befriend, who we love, how we want to be loved.

The winner of the $1,000 prize in the Paid vs Aid contest must make a choice: Do they want to use the money towards their university tuition bill, or to help others by building clean water wells, housing in Haiti, or support for orphans in Tanzania? (All funds donated would be managed and followed-up by the Global Aid Network, a registered charity with ongoing ministries in all of these locations.)

The choice is offered to the winner: What do you choose to do with the money?

But why even bother to offer a choice? Why not just give the winner the money and tell them to do whatever they want with it? The reason is to make us think a little deeper about the choices we make, and the cravings that we all have that drive those choices.

What would you choose if you won, and why? Can you recognize how your own cravings, like for intimacy, destiny, and meaning, could impact your decision?

For information on how to enter, visit this page to see a list of campuses in Canada where the contest is being offered, and look for the booth at your school this September. One prize will be awarded per campus.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

“I’ve had it with God’s promises,” a friend said. “I’ve asked Him for help numerous times and all He ever does is promise. I want Him to do something.”

“Like what?”

“Heal my body…supply my financial needs…restore a broken relationship…”

Can you relate? I sure can. Often I’ve asked God to meet a specific need. I want Him to do it soon and in a very practical way. Sometimes, He does. But sometimes He doesn’t.

A dear friend helped me get some perspective on this. “Instead of continually asking God to give you something, ask Him to make you into something. For instance, pray, ‘Make me more like Jesus. Make me more compassionate. Make me a woman of faith’.”

When we pray “Give me” we’re treating God as though He exists to serve us. Whereas, when we pray “make me” we acknowledge that He is our God and we want to serve him.

Above all else, God is interested in our eternal welfare. For that reason, He is more interested in our character than in our comfort. To conform us to Christ-like-ness takes time. It also takes adversity. The answers to “give me” are temporal, whereas the answers to “make me” are eternal.

Father, thank you that you love me enough not to give me everything I ask for. Make me into a woman of faith. I want to be more like Jesus. Amen.

Question: How can we try a different kind of prayer to ask God to make real change in us?

“Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up. “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?” John 6:8-9 (NLT)

Whenever you have a need, acknowledge your faith by planting a seed. In other words, take your focus off your need and look at ways you can provide for the needs of others, planting a seed in their lives.

This isn’t easy; it goes against our nature; it’s totally illogical. If I’m out of money, I’m probably going to think, ‘I can’t give away any money?’ Or, if I’m out of time, I’m probably going to think, ‘Why should I spend more time on something else?’ Or, if I don’t have any energy in a relationship, I’m probably going to think, ‘How can I give more energy away?’

Yet, God says this is exactly what demonstrates faith: when you have a need, you plant a seed.

You can see this principle imbedded in our blood. When you give away blood, you get more blood. You don’t end up with less blood; you end up with as much blood or more than you had before.

God often works through this harvest principle, that when you have a need, you give – and what you give away, God replenishes. Faith is like a seed, so it has to be planted – deposited.

Remember the story of the little boy who had five loaves and two fish? He gives them away, and God uses it to feed 5,000 people. Jesus takes what the boy gives; He breaks it; He blesses it; and He uses it.

That’s what God does in our lives. He takes us; He breaks us; He blesses us; and He uses us. He multiplied a little into a lot because it was planted as a seed.

Question: How do you see your responsibility and privilege as a giver in God’s Kingdom?
