I guess it’s difficult for all of us: none of us has had a perfect father, and some of us have never known our dads at all. It’s a paradox that God would be a perfect example of a father, especially when we can’t see him.

One night on the streets I met a man named Ravi. He had grown up in the Middle East and was in Canada for school. He seemed to be enjoying his time away from his family and his newfound freedom. As he started talking more about his faith and his view on life, I started to sense that he had some kind of tension in his family. He went on to tell me that his dad had 4 wives, and that he didn’t see or hear from him much. All of his life he had felt really distant from his father, and that he simply wanted his approval.

When I shared with him about how God is a father to us, he had a really hard idea grasping that concept. I guess it’s difficult for all of us: none of us has had a perfect father, and some of us have never known our dads at all. It’s a paradox that God would be a perfect example of a father, especially when we can’t see him.

1 John 3: 1 says, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” According to the Bible, God is the most loving father we could ever have. We need to first believe it, and then accept his love. Once we accept this love, and the sacrifice that he paid for us on the cross, then it will begin to change us.

1 John 3:23 says “And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them.” As we receive his love, we will then start to care less about the things in this world, and begin to experience the love, peace and acceptance that only comes from the Father’s heart.

Learn to better manage your time

Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephasor the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God. (1 Corinthians 3:18-23)

In 1956, a small group of missionaries formed a plan to reach a tribe of people who called themselves the ‘Huaorani’ in the forests of Ecuador. This tribe was extremely hostile to outsiders, and the missionaries’ only contact from the tribe warned them not to trust the Huaroani: “To you the might seem friendly for a while, but they will not stop short of killing.” Nevertheless, the missionaries knew they had to try to reach these people.

Their plan involved air-dropping small gifts to the tribe, then setting up camp nearby and gradually gaining the tribespeoples’ trust. Everything seemed to be working according to plan … until one day all five missionaries were suddenly killed by the Huaorani. Due to their previous contact with outsiders, the Huaorani were intensely distrustful of the missionaries, and instinctively feared a trap.

Newspapers around the world reported the story, and some called the men foolish for trying to make contact with the tribe. A “waste of lives”, some called it. But their work not only laid the foundation upon which later missionaries would be able to successfully share the gospel with the Huaorani, it also inspired hundreds of young people to volunteer to become missionaries themselves. (Adapted from Jesus Freaks Volume II, by DC Talk)

Paul writes that “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight” (1 Corinthians 3:19) The world will not understand the selfless devotion felt toward the God who has saved us, and may even call us foolish or persecute us for living first and foremost for God. Jesus explains that “They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me.” (John 15:21) When the world thinks it is wise, it is really foolish for ignoring God who is the source of all wisdom.

Today, let’s renew our commitment to knowing and living the gospel so that we can more winsomely witness to others, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18)

Question: In what way(s) could you ask God to make you a more winsome witness?

On a motorcycle, Laura Klock is fearlessly in control. She and her daughters are record-holding motorcyclists. However, her journey towards the finish line had not always been a smooth ride. Growing up in Wisconsin and constantly being around big pieces of metal, Laura felt at home on a motorcycle. She would almost seek solace in riding; to her, the motorcycle “didn’t care” about the emotions that she kept bottled up inside. As a young adult, Laura hid behind a mask. Her devastating feelings of being rejected, unappreciated and unloved were wrapped in a mantle of drugs, alcohol and unhealthy relationships. Like a shaken pop bottle ready to blow, she experienced a breakthrough through a simple invitation to church from her now-husband, Brian. Listen as she shares her journey through the twisted, windy paths that has brought her to where she is today.

Are you struggling in an area of your life? We are here to talk and pray with you.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

Just about the time I think I am getting “tech savvy,” I get some new electronic device to figure out. It is incredible what these things can do, but the challenge is in getting them to do it.

Toyota recently announced that two new positions are being created in every dealership across the land to assist new car buyers in figuring out how to use the electronics in their new cars. I think they are called Electronic Usability Specialists or something like that.

New gadgets are designed to make life easier, but somehow they tend to make it more complicated. I have a hard time just remembering all of my passwords, much less how to use them.

One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the simplicity of the Gospel. It is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow and will be for evermore. It isn’t complicated and doesn’t have to be.

Here’s how one of the greatest theologians of all time, Charles Haddon Spurgeon expressed it:

“God be thanked for the simplicity of the gospel. The longer I live, the more I bless God that we have not received a classical gospel, nor a mathematical gospel, nor a metaphysical gospel; it is not a gospel confined to scholars and men of genius, but a poor man s gospel, a ploughman’s gospel; for that is the kind of gospel which we can live upon and die upon. It is to us not the luxury of refinement, but the staple food of life. We want no fine words when the heart is heavy, neither do we need deep problems when we are lying upon the verge of eternity, weak in body and tempted in mind. At such times we magnify the blessed simplicity of the gospel. Jesus in the flesh made manifest becomes our soul’s bread. Jesus bleeding on the cross, a substitute for sinners, is our soul’s drink. This is the gospel for babes, and strong men want no more.”

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1John 1:9). It doesn’t get much more simple than that and doesn’t have to be.

Questions: Have you confessed your sins lately to God? What can you bring to Him today? He will cleanse you from all unrighteousness.

Have you ever ended up having a really good conversation with a stranger?

I have.

A few weeks ago, I talked to a man on the streets of Vancouver who stopped to watch the dramas that we were performing. “What’s going on here?” He asked. I told him we were a Christian drama group that does dramas that share about life and people’s struggles, and he said, “Yeah, I thought the guy in the white shirt might be a prophet or something.”

I asked him what his spiritual background was, and he told me he was raised in a non-Christian home, but had some great experiences at a Christian camp. He wandered away from following Christianity and is now practicing certain aspects of Buddhism, which he said give him a lot of peace.

In hearing him talk, I started thinking a lot about the peace that he was seeking. It seems like peace is something that people are after these days–maybe it’s because we live in a world with lots of distractions, technology, and busyness. Maybe it’s just because we’re finally starting to realize there is something missing inside.

In Isaiah 53:5, it says, “But he [Jesus] was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” This is a common theme in our dramas, and we share with people about how because Jesus died on the cross, we don’t have to worry about paying for our sins, those terrible things we do. All we have to do is ask Jesus’ forgiveness, and we can receive the peace that he offers us!

Jesus also tells us in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

What it comes down to is that we need to believe in him, ask him to forgive us, and then honour him with our lives. In return for giving up all of our sin and shame, we get a ton of peace in return. Sounds like a good deal to me!

Stories from street ministry in the Kibera slum.

Stories from street ministry in Kibera, Kenya

During the DRIME Base Leaders Summit, a lot of training was done with the leaders, but we also wanted to engage in the heart of the ministry—sharing the gospel with people on the streets! On March 8, we went to Kibera, a local slum in Nairobi, and did ministry together as a family of DRIME members from 6 different countries. God certainly moved – check out some of the highlights from our DRIMERs!

I met a man named Nick. I had the opportunity to share with him the plan of God about salvation. He finally decided he wanted to accept Christ! We prayed together, and I am so happy. (Martin, Benin)

I talked to 2 ladies, a mother and a daughter. They wanted to become Christians, and so we prayed together. They were so grateful to hear the good news! They now have Jesus as their Saviour. We prayed that they would know more about Christ, and exchanged contact information. Praise God for our new sisters in Christ! (Kung and Kong, Thailand)

God is working here this afternoon! Even though we have met lots of people who are Christians, they still want to know more about God and about the ministry. I put them in contact with members from DRIME Kenya, and they are interested in getting connected to DRIME. We also shared contact information, and we will keep in touch. We will be praying for each other even though we don’t live in the same country! (Olivier, Benin)

While doing street ministry in Kibera, I met a man named Paul. He was so open to the gospel from the beginning of our conversation. I shared about faith and how he could get have a relationship with Christ, and he decided that he wanted to accept it! I connected him to a DRIME Kenya team member, and they exchanged phone numbers. Paul will be going to church in Kibera with his new brother in Christ! (Maura, Brazil)

I had a great conversation with a man named William and his daughter Edith. He had heard the gospel before but was unsure of what would happen to him after he died. I had a chance to share with him about he could be saved by grace through faith. He prayed to receive Christ, and we wrote it down so he would always remember that day. He also said that he will come to church on Sunday. Praise the Lord! (Tanya, Canada)

The Lord moved in powerful ways that day! At least a dozen Kenyans accepted Christ, and were connected to local churches and members from DRIME Kenya for follow-up. Praise the Lord for the opportunity to make him known in Kibera!

Do you feel your faith is being shaken? Let us pray for you.

Please open your Bible and read: Hebrews 12:25-29

Television news is often filled with interviews and images of people who have suffered some unimaginable tragedy. One day we’re shown tornado survivors whose homes were torn apart by winds. Another day we may see massive floods sweeping through an unsuspecting neighborhood. Occasionally, we even view homes that are swallowed whole by terrible earthquakes. The expressions on the faces of those who have suffered loss can be haunting.

Such losses always draw our attention toward the fragility of those things we hold most dear…our homes, families and careers, for example. We seldom like these “wake-up calls” that remind us of the inherent instability of earthly life.

In a world that is shaking apart, believers in Jesus Christ have the privilege of sharing the best news imaginable: there is something that is stable, something that is completely secure. There is a rock on which we are able to stand and it cannot be shaken. That unshakable foundation, of course, is almighty God.

The Lord gives us other immovable truths as well. We can trust that Scripture is His unchanging, always-relevant truth for all time. We can depend on a secure, eternal relationship with Him through His Son. And we can be sure that a heavenly home awaits all those who place their faith in Christ. We can have stability, even in this unstable world.

Who in your life needs this life-saving Good News? Who is drowning around you, desperately needing you to throw a lifeline? Don’t wait; do it today.

Question: Who in your life needs the life-saving good news of the gospel?

“And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. . . Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word.” (Acts 8:1,4)

What an extraordinary thing! The newly converted Christians didn’t hide away in houses and caves, but continued to proclaim the Good News. They didn’t cower when they faced opposition and persecution, did they? Luke tells it almost as a matter of fact statement, but what a huge sentence that is. In spite of persecution, they went on preaching.

There was a time, not too long ago, when it was a good thing to be a woman or man of faith. People admired your steadfastness, and it testified to your morals and integrity. Not now. Today, being labeled a Christian can be a derogatory thing. It means you are “un-evolved”, stubborn, behind the times, not accepting of others.

Not everyone in our neighborhood, workplace, even in our church, is a Christian. People say the church is dying. I disagree. I think, in the face of public persecution, the sheep are being separated from the goats. We are now being scattered, just like the believers of the first century. We are now a remnant, and God has always used His remnant for great and wondrous things. Will we let Him use us?

Today, that which was once only whispered about in back alleys is being proclaimed as the norm by the media, and it is us Christians who are now whispering in the wind. Scattered amongst a growing sea of non-believers, will we stand up, speak up and proclaim the Gospel? Or will we cower in our pews, shake our heads and lament the world has gone the wrong direction?

Some whisper we are in the end times. They crouch and wait for His coming to take them away from the madness. Is that what God wants from His people? Should we not instead be screaming from the rooftops, and on the street corners, and in the pews about the King of Glory? When legislation after legislation is passed to stifle us from praying in public, and affirms lifestyles the Bible clearly states is wrong, what will be our response? Slink away back to our prayer corners shaking our heads, or be like the first of our brothers and sisters who went on to proclaim Christ risen and left the reception of that message up to God?

This simple, matter-of-fact sentence in Acts chapter 8, verse 4 convicts me to the core of my being. I have always been one to cower to opposition, and swallow my opinion in order to keep the peace. Perhaps I should leave the peace keeping up to God and not try to control the situation so everyone likes me. Maybe, instead God is calling me to stand firm and proclaim Him as my Lord. Maybe I should no longer be content to whisper prayers in the wind.

Question: Are you content to whisper in the wind?
