Written by W Smith

This is Part 4 of a 5 part series – To Call Him Lord: A Study In The Book of Acts

Read Acts 10

Have you ever been asked to do something that didn’t make sense? Have you ever received instructions that shocked you or upset the status quo?

Acts chapter 10 tells the story of two men who met under very unexpected circumstances. The story takes place not long after Jesus Christ had ascended to Heaven. Due to persecution, the followers of Jesus were beginning to scatter from Jerusalem throughout the known world. In chapter 10, we meet Cornelius as he encounters a man of Jewish background who had embraced the teachings and person of Jesus Christ.

1. How is Cornelius described in verses 1 and 2?
2. Cornelius was living in Caesarea, where received unexpected instructions from God. How did he receive these instructions? What did God tell him to do? How did Cornelius respond?
3. Peter also received unusual instructions in a most unexpected manner. Why would these instructions have puzzled Peter so much?
4. What happened while Peter was pondering the vision? How did Peter get clarification as to what he was to do?
5. How did Peter respond? What happened as a result of his obedience?
6. What message did Peter give to Cornelius and the Gentiles gathered with him? How did they respond?
7. How did God respond to these Gentiles? What do you see as the result of the obedience of these two men (Cornelius and Peter) to God’s instructions?
8. In the film, Dan talks about meeting with businessmen outside of work and church. Name two or three places outside of church that you might be able to “live your faith” in front of others.
9. Has God ever called for you to obey Him in unusual or unexpected ways? On a scale of 1-10, how ready are you to obey Him, even if the instructions are unusual or unexpected? What might hold you back from a wholehearted, willing response to Him?
10. Do you have any additional observations, questions or comments about this study? How can we pray for you at this time?
