The Status of Women

The millennium is approaching and its time to take stock. How will women face the financial challenges of the coming years? According to recent statistics, the future looks brighter every day.

• In the United States, eight million women own their own businesses and employ more than twice that number of people (33% of businesses in the US).

• Women control 80% of consumer spending in the United States.

• In 1976, only 17% of all donations to political parties were made by women. By 1996, 23%.

• Women are not only more involved in financial planning and investments, but now represent 25% of all e-trading.

• 55% of all college degrees are earned by women.

• Women in technology are more inclined to start their own businesses, and with good reason. According to Women in Technology International, the failure rate of new female-owned businesses (39%) is half that of all new businesses (80%).

• In one generation, the average female salary has gone from 59% of the average male salary to between 80% and 85%.

• According to the National Foundation for Women Business Owners, women-owned businesses–which account for one quarter of business in the economy worldwide–produce annual revenues of $2.3 trillion in the United States.
