What Holds Things Together?

Written by M. Larson

Has your world shattered and you are not sure where to turn?

The apple seems to get credit for several important things. Some people say it was the forbidden fruit that Adam and Eve ate in the Garden of Eden when they committed the first sin of disobedience to God. It also has been claimed that an apple falling on Sir Isaac Newton’s head can be credited with helping him discover the law of gravitation.

Newton was only 24 years old when he discovered the great law of nature that all bodies of matter possess a mutual attraction. That’s what we call gravity. That’s what makes apples fall. That’s what keeps us from flying off the earth, even though it’s spinning through space.

The Bible has very interesting things to say on this subject. Colossians 1:16-17 tells us, “For by him [Christ] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Isn’t that an amazing revelation? Christ is not only the Creator of the universe, but also the Power behind the gravity that holds things together!

Applying this thought on a personal level, we see that the Lord is the One who can also hold our lives together. Many people live miserable lives because they fail to take God into account in their planning. They do not seek His wisdom. They do not seek His will. Instead, like the ancient men who strove to build the Tower of Babel, they barge ahead with their own ideas and completely forget about God.

But the plans of Babel fell apart and God scattered those people to the four comers of the earth. They left Him out of their thinking and out of their plans. Therefore God took away their ability to stay together by confusing them with different languages. Although “in Him all things hold together,” it is also in His power to break things apart. God’s power knows no limit.

Thus, it is His power that can make “all things work together for good” in our lives, if we truly love Him and seek His will (Romans 8:28). It is through His power that we can have well-integrated personalities, that we can become mature, that we can meet the problems of life unafraid. It is through His power that we can find the main purpose for our lives–that we may glorify Him.

Lord, May I allow Your power to hold me unwaveringly to the best course. Your way is best! Amen.
