When God is Silent

Written by Janet Morris Grimes

Are you feeling ready to walk away from a relationship – are you possibly even considering divorce? We want to pray for you.

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope” (Psalm 130: 5).

Have you wondered what God is doing when you can’t see him? Have you ever felt that He is too busy to answer your cry for help? Have you felt forgotten in this crazy world? We all feel that way at times.

For whatever reason, sometimes, God chooses to be silent. His purpose is not to punish you.  He is not too busy.  Don’t for a second believe the lie that He may have forgotten you.

The silence may be what pushes us to dig deeper, like a growing plant in search of water. It could be that the answers are before our eyes, but we are too human to see what God wants us to see. Maybe we are looking with our eyes instead of our heart. It might not be time for God to reveal what he has for you.

It’s not easy to wait, especially when God is silent, but experience tells us that it will be worth it.  We know that our impatience will only get in the way of what he plans to do with us. We can try to hurry him along, but we’ll only end up feeling frustrated. The truth is that we should only want what he wants for us. True happiness lies in resting in his will, in his hands, on his path, in his time.

So, we wait and believe and trust. In posture of prayerful acceptance we can leave all of our doubts behind.

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

Dear God, please hold us even closer during the times we wonder what you are up to. We long to feel your presence; to see evidence that you are working even when we cannot see you. We never mean to doubt you, but we get lonely, and sometimes scared, by the happenings in our life. When we feel the most out of control, help us rest in the fact that you are more in control than ever. And rather than worry, we always choose to worship you, because it is impossible to do both at the same time. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Questions: Do you sometimes feel God is too busy for your problems? Who is telling you that God has forgotten you? Why?

I have not felt that God is too busy for me but rather I have no time for Him. This sets me on a guilt road and I get into depression when things start to go wrong at the same time. I start blaming myself that due to my inconsistency in quiet time, that is why I can’t hear God.

This is so wrong, and I learnt that no matter how far we feel we are from Him, He never leaves us. it is always us taking that step to move away from Him.

I am going to include more of God in all of my life now.

Thank you for this reminder. This is where Ive been at. Frustrated..hurt and feeling rejected and left by my God. Its an everyday battle to surrender to his will while at the same time not seeing or hearing him in our situation.

Praise God that he never leaves or forsakes me.

I know that God is always with me, I just don’t want to miss HIs message, or His nudge, or the subtle hint that He may have for me at any moment. I don’t want to miss that blessing. I need to simply trust God and know that He always has my best interest in His perfect plan, and then give HIM all the glory in prayer. Thank you for this devotional~ PTL

Good devotional. Answer: Nope, never feel HE’s too busy but rather I may be too impatient to wait for His ‘right time’ or I’m too busy and noisy in my daily life and miss HIS voice.
Waiting is the thing that has taken me years to learn to do. So often we want instant microwave, right NOW answers and that is not very often HIS way in my life.

  • Jamie says:

Thank-you for the reminder. Sometimes when things seem like an immediate problem to me waiting on GOD is hard. But I have learned that GOD is always right and always right on time.May GOD be with each one of you.

  • Mary says:

I think everything you have said is true, however, what if God is speaking and your just not sure. Is it God or satan? I have searched out knowledgable & wise Christians to help me but even this is vague. What if I have been waiting when the answer has been there all a long and I just too afraid?

  • Kimberly says:

This is a very hard one for me to deal with. For years I thought I was hearing Gods voice and it ended up being a combination of Satan and myself….I guess!!!
Now I don’t trust anything I hear, see or feel and it’s not a good feeling. I just sit back and wait to see what happens and it’s not the best way to live life. Not sure what to do to change things because I’m extremely tired

kimberly,I know how you feel.Ive been there and even now im in a situation where i am doubting if i heard God speak to me.one thing i have learned in my life is that prayer is like a bulldozer that clears your way.youre right about it not being the best way to live.I think you can start out by asking God to forgive you for acting on your on voice and give you the grace to hear him clearly.the enemy does everything in his power to stop us from hearing God…simply start by asking God to draw you closer to him and make you more sensitive..trust him to do that and test everything you hear by the word of God..if it isnt biblical, forget it..hearing God is like learning how to walk…its a ste at a time..the more you pratcice, the more you will hear him..try reading joyce meyers book, how to hear God’s voice..its realy good! God bless you

    Janet, thank you.
I have yet to feel that God is too busy in anything that involves me, myself and I. My life is too blessed to believe such a thing. If I don’t hear from God, that’s my doing. I’m not still enough to hear Him. Being still is the same as learning to walk. So one day at a time, one step at a time……..and the doubt will soon fade away.

It seems that those times when “God is silent” proves to be times of reflection, and a deeper digging into the presence of God.
The busyness is unfruitful. The distractions are no longer to keep me from being able to “deal with what is”. You know that what needs to be faced is going to be painful or the very least uncomfortable but the thought of breakthrough gives you the impetus to set your face like flint and go on through it.
It’s in the quiet that we hear that wonderful Still Small Voice, behind us saying “this is the way – walk therein.”
I wait for that. I read His Word, listen to songs of deliverance and enjoy these devotionals and comments for encouragement and insight.
Be blessed every one and good night!
