Would You Give Away Your Last $25?

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:38)

If God told you to give your last $25, would you give it? I tell you, GIVE IT! Trust me, I know! Years ago, during a very financially challenging time, I was at our bank, taking out about the last $25 we had to buy food. As I walked to my car, I overheard a man talking to another man, “Now what am I going to do? The bank will be closed until Monday. I won’t have any money.” For some reason, he could not get any money from his paycheck.

Wouldn’t that make you just rush right over and give him some? God prompted me to do so, but I never found out what the problem was, because I got in my car and drove away – to my shame and embarrassment. I thought if I gave him the last of my money, how would I feed my family?

That was before I knew better how to obey the Lord, and to this day, I deeply regret it. I didn’t trust God and I never experienced His hand at work in that situation. God was trying to bless someone through me and teach me something, but I didn’t listen. Blessings were lost for both of us. Don’t let that happen to you.

“If you give to others, you will be given a full amount in return. It will be packed down, shaken together, and spilling over into your lap. The way you treat others is the way you will be treated.” (Luke 6:38 Contemporary English Version)

Questions: Have you missed out on God’s blessing due to fear? How can you prepare your heart to be open to God’s call?

  • Lynn, what a great devotion to trust in the Lord to provide! Though there are scammers out there, I liked your point that you had felt the Spirit nudging you to give, but fear held you back. It showed me that ought to be the determining factor in my giving. If the Spirit s nudging me to give to someone, it’s not for me to judge whether or not they are scamming me or whether the person will be responsible with my gift to them. If God is nudging me to give to someone, all I need to do is give as the Lord is leading me to do so and trust the Lord that His purposes will be accomplished. Like you said, when we are faithful to give, we’ll both be blessed. :)

Hello, Dave! So nice to see you here! You are so right. There are so many scammers out there. One needs to be extremely careful. Relying on the Holy Spirit is so important. Thanks so much for your comment, Dave. I deeply appreciate it. Bless you!

Oh, Julie, I so know how you feel. I hate those regrets! But all we do is go forward, seeking to do better and to obey the next whisper of the Spirit. Thank you so much for commenting. Bless you!

Cathy and Lynn, you do have be careful. I work in the security field and see the people everyday that are out there either needing it or pulling the scams. One person sat on the side of the the road everyday looking so pathetic he would have people give him the money, yet when he left that highway he was driving an Escalade with the spinning rims and the underbody lights.
I tried to be wise once and bought somebody a meal who told me they had not eaten in a while, when I walked by later they were trying to sell the meal. :-(

This is so relevant to me! One of my biggest regrets is when God whispered to me to help my sister financially. Mind you, it wasn’t a huge amount of money. But my dh was unemployed, so “what about us” i wondered. DUH! God would have provided! I will live with that regret forever; I know I’m forgiven, but it still grieves me heart.

Cathy, you are so right. I’m the same way…now. I’d give to everyone. Listening to the Spirit’s nudgings is essential, isn’t it? Thanks so much for commenting. I appreciate it. Blessings to you!

This is a tough one. Whenever I see beggars, I want to give them something. But I have to be careful as I want to give to everyone. For the past year, I have seen the same people working the traffic lights in our community. I pray that God gives me the wisdom to discern who really needs and who is just taking advantage. Sometimes I have felt a very strong urge to give, and I do follow that leading.

Oh, Nikki! You are not alone. I think we all miss it in this area sometimes. You have such a precious, giving heart, and when it is in your heart to be a giver and reflect the character of God, you will! It is our willingness to be obedient that counts, isn’t it? Thank you so much for your comment. May the Lord bless you!

I think I missed it in this area sometimes. I an a gving person yet sometimes I question God. Each day I asked the Lord to show me ways that I can bless others and each day I have to prepare my heart to listen and obey His voice. No need to ask if i’m not willing to follow.
