Seeing God Face to Face

Note: Due to his request, the person’s name who told us his life story has been withheld.

Growing up in the Middle East, I was a strong adherent of Islam. I tried my best to do exactly what the Qur’an and the Muslim Sharia laws teach. However, despite my best efforts, I felt guilty. I thought that I must be the worst person on the face of the Earth because I couldn’t keep the laws.

I believed strongly that Islam and the Qur’an were true, but I struggled with my knowledge of my own sinfulness. Because of this, I thought I was surely going to Hell, and so I feared death greatly. And I always felt empty inside.

Who is Jesus really?

When I was 27 years old, I was introduced to the Bible for the first time. I started just reading it for its stories since I had been taught that the Bible had been corrupted. I was also taught that Jesus was just a prophet who was inferior to Muhammad. I was certain that Muslims embraced Jesus more truly than Christians did.

I considered myself a modern, open-minded, university educated person so I saw no harm in reading the Bible.  I never once thought for a second that I’d ever leave Islam and become a Christian!

I had a negative opinion of Christians. I saw Christians as being immoral, a view I got from Hollywood movies and seeing how some of the nominal Christians in my own country lived.

However, during a time of terrible personal struggle in my life, I had been reading the Qur’an and praying eagerly for help. I was in real trouble. A co-worker told me that if you pray in Jesus’ name, that Jesus will help you. I didn’t believe that, but figured it was worth a try in my desperate state.

Cautiously reading the Bible

After that I started to read the Bible seriously for the first time, and was surprised at how Jesus did not speak like a prophet. He spoke with total authority. Muslims say that the Bible has been corrupted, but everywhere in the Bible Jesus speaks with authority! I thought that Jesus either must be much more than just a prophet, or else he was a complete liar. Jesus also seemed to accept people regardless of what state their lives were in. People like me!

If Jesus was who he said he was, I wanted to believe in him. But I was still skeptical; I still needed something more to convince me.

Jesus, is that you?

I was shocked when, the next day, Jesus appeared to me, face to face! I saw him as clearly as you can see your computer screen right now. I saw him for only a few seconds, but he was Arab in appearance, with long hair and a white robe. What I saw seemed so powerful to me, it was like experiencing lightning and thunder together! I was filled with joy and miraculously all of the personal struggles I was dealing with quickly disappeared!

And yet even after all that I still could not accept that Jesus was the Son of God! Doing that is very difficult for a person raised as a Muslim. And when I immigrated to Canada, I was again displeased with how many Christians live. I lived my life as an atheist, and religion fell out of my life.

My need for God returns

But then I again fell into deep personal difficulties. I decided to try to recapture the faith of my youth: Islam, not Christianity. I decided to study the life of Muhammad, and surprisingly concluded that even atheists live better lives than Muhammad! Every time Muhammad did something wrong, somehow it was justified or conveniently a word was received from God to say it’s okay. As difficult as it was, I decided that I could no longer follow Islam.

I still needed God, and remembered the vision I had many years earlier of Jesus. I started to research Christianity in the same way I researched Islam. Through my research I became convinced that Jesus did die on the cross as payment for our sins and was raised to life again!

I made my final decision one day when I was watching a Christian TV show. The speaker’s words seemed to be speaking directly to me. That day I accepted Christ and was reborn into a new life. I still had trouble understanding some things fully, but realized that trying to fully understand an unlimited God would never be completely successful.

After I made my decision, I became a better husband and father, and began to pray for and love other people in a way I’d never done before. I no longer fear death like I did before and I no longer feel empty inside. I now worship God out of pure joy, not out of obligation!

Take a look at your life. How would you describe it? Contented? Rushed? Exciting? Stressful? Moving forward? Holding back? For many of us it’s all of the above at times.

There are things we dream of doing one day, there are things we wish we could forget. You are embarking on a whole new life, maybe this is the time to invite God to be a part of it. In the Bible, it says that Jesus came to make all things new. What would your life look like if you could start over with a clean slate?

Living with hope

If you are looking for peace, there is a way to balance your life. No one can be perfect, or have a perfect life. But every one of us has the opportunity to experience perfect grace through a personal relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ.

You can receive Christ right now by faith through prayer. Praying is simply talking to God. God knows your heart and is not so concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart. Here’s a suggested prayer:

Lord Jesus, I want to know you personally. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life to you and ask you to come in as my Savior and Lord. Take control of my life. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Make me the kind of person you want me to be.

Does this prayer express the desire of your heart? You can pray it right now, and Jesus Christ will come into your life, just as He promised.

Is this the life for you?

If you invited Christ into your life, thank God often that He is in your life, that He will never leave you and that you have eternal life. As you learn more about your relationship with God, and how much He loves you, you’ll experience life to the fullest.

I met God last year when I was suffering from respiratory arrest. I was in a medically induced coma twice and God came to me, took my hand, and led me to a healing place. Oh yes there is a God and He is there for you no matter what. We are all sinners and the only way to God is through our belief in his son Jesus. I thank God for my life every day. And yes Jesus loves me!

Look it’s very understandable if one would focus on this God said only threw loving Jesus can you come to know me…so with that said Jesus died to save us because He loves us…so with that said look how we love our mom dad kids grand kids grand parents friends and so on….so where does this love come from to love them? It’s very simple it’s a free gift from God it’s natural to us all but has sinful humans we forget what God said He said only threw his Son shall we come to know Him….look yes i love all my love ones but i learned this from the spirit that guide’s us every day and what i learned was i was given a free gift to come and love Jesus christ first before all to truely love my love one like He intended us to do so and doing so i will meet His Father because i love His son Jesus first before all….love you all ty Jesus…

Hi Petu, what a great thing to pray for. There is no greater purpose in life than to know and be known by God. Tell me, where have you looked to meet with God? What expectations do you have of what that meeting would be like? Let me caution you, I have met many people who have expectations of what would convince them of what meeting God would be like, and when He reveals Himself to them in different ways, they have rejected Him because He came to them differently than they expected. That is what happened for many when Jesus came to first century Palestine; many of the religious elite there had preconceived ideas of how Messiah would reveal Himself and what He would do. When Jesus failed to meet those expectations those people became some of the fiercest opponents of Jesus and ultimately killed Him.

One of the great ways that we can make sure our expectations of God are in line with how He reveals Himself is through the things He said in the Bible. Have you had opportunity to read God’s revelation of Himself in the Bible? One of Jesus’ disciples wrote an introduction to Jesus in his Gospel account of the life of Jesus; he wrote, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1,14) In that same Gospel account written by John, Jesus is quoted to have said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me…Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father.” (John 14:6,9) So if you want to know God, the only way to do that by getting to know Jesus.

Let me pray that you would get to know Jesus: Dear Jesus, I pray for my friend Petu. He would like to know God and based on Your words, I know that You are God and You alone can help him to do that. So I ask that Petu would discover the truth about You and that He would put his trust in You. Help him as he reads the revelation of You in the Bible that he would understand and meet with You there. I pray that he would put aside his own expectations and allow You to show Yourself to him in the way that is best. Bring others in his life who can help him to know You better. Amen.

Petu, let me recommend a site that can help explain about having a relationship with Jesus. Have a look at http://powertochange.com/discover/faith/discoverpurpose/ and let me know what you think. I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Ferdie–
No one this side of heaven knows what Jesus looks like. If we did, we’d probably end up worshiping his picture rather than him!

  • Ferdie says:

Hello, what does Jesus look a like, is it same as we can see at the computer?

  • Anonymous says:

Hi! I’d like to share one experience I had when I was feeling a bit sad… I was at a worship&praise meeting and sitting on a chair.. Then suddenly I saw Jesus once kneeling in front of me, with open arms… I was too afraid to just let him hug me though I only found good things in him. All those that the 1. Corinthians 13 tells what love is, Jesus was and is. I still struggle with trust. But thought that its worth sharing that God keeps working on us personally and that its not only history but also today. He comes to lift us up when we need comfort and stays with us all the time faithfully, as he promises in the Scriptures.

I actually had Jesus set with me. I was about to face a battle that would leave me trusting no one. On my front porch, Jesus (God) sat with me. He said your battles with your family are about to begin. In less than two weeks they did.

Godfrey and Lucretia, rejoicing to see the firmness of your faith in Christ.

  • Godfrey- Malawi says:

I thank God for his faithfulness and appearances of Jesus to some so that they can believe in Him. To some God has spoken through dreams, audible voice etc. But whatever is heard or dreamt must be in line with the Word of God- the bible. Whatever is heard, seen or dreamt must give peace of mind otherwise dreams or voice too can be corrupted if it is not in line with the bible. Blessings to you the family of God in Jesus the Christ.

  • Lucretia says:

I actually want to SEE GOD my father FACE TO FACE it’ll feel really joyful to see my only father that I love and my only father that I WILL ALWAYS LOVE

  • Tom Tom says:

    LH–
Thanks for your thoughts and comments.

I agree–God speaks in more ways than the Bible. He speaks to us during prayer, through the Holy Spirit, through circumstances and situations, and through other Christians. To limit God’s ability to get our attention is to limit God, period.

That being said, anything we “hear” from God had better line up with scripture, or it isn’t from God–right?

  • LH says:

I disagree that God only makes his presence felt via the Bible. Though He has spoken through scriptures to me often as well, He has used dreams and sporadic revelations in my soul as well (regarding my relationship with Him or things I should do better about – always lovingly, of course). Putting limits on a limitless God is the spirit of religion talking. He loved us enough to be tortured and die for us. To say that He hides behind the Bible & only comes out for those special cases assumes He settles for having less close a bond than we have with our earthly parents, when He’s the one who created sand delighted in us before they even knew we existed. It’s such a beautiful thing to experience fully how involved He loves to be with us, & the only reason He’d only show through the Bible would be if that’s the only way you allow yourself to be open to Him speaking. (I hope this doesn’t sound harsh. I only mean to tear this temple veil He already tore when He died but many try to put back up between God & His beloved children.)

Hi. Im intrigued by what you have to say, I am now also a young Christian.
I was born into a very wealthy staunch muslim family.
I studied the Quran , and the day I read Surah Maryam Chapter 19 Vs 15 in the Quran, it changed my life. It says in this passage ” That He will be born , He will die and He will be raised again , Guess who the He is they are referring to , No its not Mohammad SAW , its Issa Maseed Jesus the Messaih. This passage opened my eyes , I am now a humble Christian and have accepted JESUS into my heart and my life. Yes Im a struggling man , I lost my family and all the worldly wealth , but I am so blessed and rich in CHRIST. There is more to speak about more to tell others out there the secrets of things that I have discovered. I asked myself ” Why is it JESUS is the one one all Muslims are waiting for at the end of days . Why is He so significant then to them and not right now. Why is the one who they believe is significant dead and buried PBUH. JESUS is LORD , King of kings and LORD of lords there is no other God.

  • Chris says:

megs…sorry to hear of your struggles….actually, God has spoken to us and does still every time we open the bible. that is the only way to build real and genuine faith as romans 10.17 says. of course, where the bible isnt readily available, then jesus does make personal appearances in dreams to people in such situations as the arabs for example are in but they like we, once we receive jesus, will need to build our lives on the solid foundation of the promises in the bible. otherwise, we will always be wanting a special revelation, Word or appearance from jesus to find encouragement and understanding when God has ordained that his living words in the bible will do all we need to have done in our lives as we walk by faith in them each and every day…prayng now that jesus words come alive to you just as hebrews 4.12 says that they are active and living and piecing, sharper than any two-edged sword in this world. blessings!

Peter, the experience of the anonymous author of this article is not unusual once one begins to investigate the various religions in depth. Also, I resonate with your praise of Jesus. Once we realize that God is infinitely righteous, we can also know that every one of our sins is infinitely sinful because it is against His infinite goodness. And so it is only the infinite sacrifice of Christ on the Cross that can cover our sins and bring us back into a relationship with God like the one Adam originally had. And so we do praise Jesus, Him being the way to God, Him bringing us the truth about us, our sinfulness, God and God’s graceful mercies, and Him being the way to eternal life. Amen.
