Jealousy and gossip is tearing my friends apart

Written by M. Larson

churchgossipI am really struggling with a gossiping, jealous spirit, and anger towards some of the women in my church over some things that have happened. I really want to stop this. I prayed for God to release this in me. What are my next steps? I am saved and I have asked for the Holy Spirit to move in me. What should I do now?

Advice: I have often been hurt by church people, and of course it has upset me. But I know one thing: that when we allow the actions of others to make us angry, bitter, and resentful, it separates us from the Lord–and then we’re liable to react in un-Christian ways (only being human, y’know).

I’m afraid what has happened in your present case is that you “let the sun go down on your anger” as Ephesians 4:26 says (that means you kept brooding over the situation); and the devil got a foothold (vs. 27). So bitterness, anger, and slander took root (vs 31), and the Holy Spirit was grieved (v. 30). Nevertheless, He has obviously been speaking to your heart about all this–and you are ready to do what He wants you to do. When you do that, you’ll no longer have a struggle with a gossiping, jealous spirit.

What do you have to do? Get rid of the anger and bitterness. How do you do it?

Well, Ephesians 4:32 has the answer: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Just forgive those women (they’re only human too), and let the Lord wash all the bitterness, anger, jealousy, and gossip away. When you forgive those women and overlook anything they did, you will be able to be pleasant and nice to them.

May the Lord help, lead, and bless you!

In Christ’s love, Dr. Muriel
