Crisis on the Horn
Africa is experiencing the worst drought in 60 years, putting nearly 12 million lives in jeopardy. According to CNN, “More than 29,000 children have died over the past three months in what is the most acute food security emergency on Earth”.
Severe drought in southern Somalia, political unrest, and poor harvests across the Horn of Africa, are the major catalysts for the devastation currently taking place.
Unfortunately, aid operations in Somalia are extremely difficult due to political and terrorist involvement. The people of Somalia are making desperate pilgrimages to over-capacity relief camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. The UN Refugee Agency estimates about 3,000 new refugees a day between the two countries.
The situation is desperate. This drought is projected to last through November and requires immediate global assistance.
That’s why Global Aid Network (GAiN) is responding and needs your help. Over $130,000 has been donated by Canadians to GAiN so we can demonstrate the love of God, in word and deed, to hurting and needy people. Local partners on the ground have already received these funds and with the help of the Ethiopian church, are feeding the starving.
Your donation provides food packs containing sorghum flour, chickpeas, and lentils, which could directly determine the life or death of entire families. It only takes $106 to feed a family of seven for a week, which is about $2 a day.
The Government of Canada is matching donations from individual Canadians
until September 16, 2011. Help GAiN save lives by donating today.
