How Far Does Faith Go?
At first it seemed like common sense, then I wondered, “How am I going to do this?” I had just written down on a piece of paper, “By God’s grace I will… share the gospel everyday.”
Kelley Myles serves with Power to Change in the ministry of Campus for Christ. She began her ministry in 2001, and recently began a faith barrier challenge that changed her life and the lives of many others.
I prayed about this commitment further and decided to seek God, to share the gospel everyday for 40 days to get back into a lifestyle of helping people discover Jesus: not just because it’s my job but because I love Jesus Christ (which means sharing the gospel on Saturday and Sunday too)!
I wrote about my challenge every day on my blog for accountability, reflection and to inspire the students. I finished on Nov. 10. It was incredible!
Every day, God provided me with someone to share with. The most difficult part was not always having someone I knew I could share the gospel with that day because I was working from home or didn’t have a meeting set up with a friend. Sometimes I would have to call or message somebody and intentionally start a conversation, trusting God that it would lead to the gospel. At one point, I was even praying for a Jehovah’s Witness to come knocking on my door!
One day Hannah and I met a girl on campus and she was open to hearing the gospel. She didn’t know how to go about having a relationship with Jesus and we were able to share that with her. She accepted Christ as her Savior on the spot! We were floored! It was so neat that God led us to her that day. She has shared since that she had so many questions about God and Christianity and no answers – she was so thankful that we approached her. What we thought was a random meeting was actually a divine appointment!
I was also praying for opportunities to share with my neighbour. One day I ran into him in the driveway and we talked about heaven. I told him about trusting in Jesus to get there and not religion. I was so excited that I told his daughter about our encounter. She shared with me that she hadn’t been able to sleep the night before and was praying late into the night that I would be able to share the gospel with him. Amazing!
I’ve learned to pray more intentionally and persevere in prayer for those around me. I finally connected with people I have prayed for over this year, and friends I’ve been sharing Jesus with (and praying for 10 years+) I was able to reconnect with. I found that many had been thinking about their spiritual life, starting to ponder about their mortality, or even contemplate matters of faith.
During these 40 days, one of my supporters said, “Kelley, you are just being obedient to Psalm 96:2.” It’s been a motto for me: proclaim his salvation day after day! My challenge now is to continue to be faithful and make Christ known… I encourage you to do the same.
Kelley’s last blog entry was titled “Day 41 and beyond…” and reads: This isn’t the end. It’s the beginning. Seriously.
Thank you Kelley for your inspiration and encouragement to us and for sharing with others the good news: Jesus provides the power to bring real and lasting change.
