Empty Energy Shake
He whips open the fridge looking for something to eat.
“I’m starving.”
He needs a pick-me-up so he decides to make his favourite shake. He nearly fills a bottle with liquid from a carton of worldly wisdom that he bought on sale last week.
From there, he proceeds to add a variety of essential nutrients. He dumps two heaping scoops of striving onto the surface of the liquid and it begins to dissolve. He needs some flavour. Two tablespoons of entertainment should be enough.
“I almost forgot!”
He reaches into the back of the cupboard for a tiny unmarked jar. The lid is crusted shut and he strains to twist it off. Once open, he reaches for a pinch of tradition sprinkling it over the surface.
“Perfect.”
After fastening the lid, he vigorously shakes the bottle with its contents inside, mixing the dry clumps of powder until they are a smooth, drinkable liquid. He tilts his head back and expertly chugs the bottle in eight seconds flat.
And yet, even as he sets the bottle back down on the counter, he cannot help but think, is this all there is? He knows he will return over and over again to the drink that never satisfies. Is there not more? Will he ever be free from this weight, this chain, this religion?
Drink living water and never thirst again.
