“He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD” (Deuteronomy 8:3).
It isn’t fun to be humbled, to have our faults pointed out; to have our failures and shortcomings displayed for everyone to see; to have broadcasted to anyone watching that we are incapable of providing for ourselves.
Yet it is an essential part of the learning process.
In Deuteronomy, Moses reminded the people of Israel that “[God] humbled you … to teach you.”
In the same way, God humbles us to teach us.
As long as we think we can handle the situation, as long as we are convinced we know what we’re doing, as long as we depend on our own strength rather than relying on God’s, we will remain proud.
We must be humble to hear God. We must be humble to learn.
Only in humility can we understand God’s message to us that “man does not live on bread alone”. There is more to life than meets the eye. Beyond our daily physical needs are our profound spiritual needs. No matter how competent we are, we are powerless to provide for these deepest needs.
If we are humble we realize that we are dependent on God for everything, from each breath we inhale to the glorious salvation He offers.
Father God, I want to be humble before You. I need to learn from You. Help me to seek You with all my heart and feed on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Questions: What is something you have learned when you have been humbled? Why is humility essential for learning?

Thank you Suzanne for the wonderful devotional. We all need to be reminded to stay humble. That is the only way to be able to be obediant to God. If we don’t humble ourselves then we can’t hear what He is saying. I sometimes forget that and try to do things my own way. Thank you Jesus for pointing this out to me today and thank you for my salvation! Amen.
Wow, this was quite a challenging devotional. I know the time I went through 2-3 years ago, in a bad relationship really brought me to this level. It’s funny how God works. Well, I hope & pray that we can continue to embrace His work, and fear God. God bless.
suzanne, thank you.
how awesome God is that I am worthy of love like a love I’v never experienced. In humility I have found I am WORTH, I have something to contribute to the world, that I am a good person, that I am not alone; all these things I have learned. I know now I can do nothing without Him, that’s humility and lets not leave out the gratefulness that is given.
humility has been an integral part of my growing. it takes the pride, selfishness and the me, me, poor me out(which was my hardened heart). I never thought I’d live to see the day. But by the grace of God go I.
i think God is humbling us now with the things we are going through. i will trust in Him to show us the right way to go
