Spirituality is a popular subject these days. Whole stores are filled with books and various gadgets that are sold to help one get in touch spiritually. There is just so much out there and at times one can feel confused about it all.
In these days of growing awareness in the spiritual and the supernatural, God gives us guidance as to what to watch for. He tells us how to grow in our spiritual life without confusion. He spells it out for us quite simply:
“Grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18, NIV).
True spirituality moves you toward knowledge of Jesus as the Influencer of your heart. If something or someone other than Jesus takes front and center stage in your search for spirituality, be on guard. Guard your heart from merely knowledge of religious facts or focusing on special powers or energy. True spirituality is allowing Jesus’ influence on your heart to reflect change in the way you handle yourself. It is His power at work in you.
If you desire to develop spiritually, allow Jesus to influence your heart and your choices in a greater way today. Allow His influence to cause you to turn from the choices that exclude Him, and to accept His forgiveness. Ask for His wisdom to help you determine if a particular activity or source of information will increase your understanding of how Jesus can influence your heart and your life. Anything less is a cheap counterfeit.
Father God, there is so much out there today on spirituality. Please help me to grow in my knowledge of Jesus and His strength in my life as my Savior. Help me to grow in allowing Your influence upon my heart in such a way that it changes how I live. Forgive me for the times when I have focused on spirituality that was not centered on Jesus. Help me to be discerning and wise as I grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, my Lord and my Savior. In His strong name I pray, amen.
Questions: How will you allow Jesus to influence your heart and your choices in a greater way today? Do you know what it means to live a spirit-filled life? Let’s talk about it.

Thanks so much Gail for the reminder.
May I suggest Proverbs chapter 3 to be read as an addition to our devotional this morning?
It’s a powerful reminder also of acknowledging GOD in all our ways.
Romel H
I think we have to always be on guard and remember that Jesus is Lord of our Lives, our All in All, our Everything, our Reason for Living and Never Ever forget that. Romel thank you for reminding us of Proverbs Chapter 3 what an excellent chapter to live by! Hugs,Linda!!!
Awesome devotion, Gail! We must always be on guard against false teaching/prophesy, as we are warned in the Scriptures! There is an abundance of ‘counterfeit’ spirituality being used to satisfy the human desire for meaning and significance. But, as you pointed out, any spiritual pursuit that excludes Jesus as the central focus is in vain, and eventually leads to idolatry and/or self worship.
Thank you for the devotional, I haven’t been reading them lately but read this one (and I like the new format, looks good ;). It seems to me that Gail you are really gifted at letting God use you to speak to the heart. A simple yet profound devo, thanks.
Jesus is all that we need
A very good devotional/ reminder. It’s true, especially in this day & age. There are many influences out there, and especially with regards to Christianity, there is a lot of relativism. I am even being challenged in this area at times, and sometimes I am reminded, ‘what does the bible say?” It’s tough (& sometimes uncomfortable) but I am reminded that God is clear in His answers. I do pray for more wisdom, discernment & guarding of my heart daily. God bless.
Gail. Thank you for the wonderful teaching. We are really in the last days and many people are preaching strange teachings. As believers we need to test very spirit, prophesy and teachings to avoid being led astray.
God bless you.
Feeling very confused and struggling with getting close to God.I know that He says He never leaves us nor forsakes us but I am not feeling anything right now.I know it is not based on feelings but he made me a feeling person so why am I struggling. I feel empty inside…I have nothing to give. I have never felt like this in my whole life. Oh yeah I have a battle with depression but this is so dofferent. I am post menopause..don’t know if that has anything to do with it.
Please pray for me. Ugh.

Psalm 94:19 Lord, when doubts fill my mind, when my heart is in turmoil, quiet me and give me renewed hope and cheer.
