“Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare” (Psalm 40:5, NIV).

I don my hat and let the net fall over my face. I’m wearing good running shoes with a sock protector over my socks and a long sleeved shirt. My daughter Elizabeth grabs her camera, binoculars, and car keys and we’re off to see some of the wild flowers at Eurardy, a Bush Heritage station in Western Australia.

The country side is awash with pink and white heath interspersed by waving smoke bushes. We pass wattle trees decked out in yellow pompoms, trees with bright red bottle brushes, banksia that carry celebration candles, grevillea with flowers like fancy crocheting work.  The intricate design of each flower leaves me groping for adequate descriptions. There are nodding chocolate lilies and wreath flowers that resemble fancy decorated birthday cakes.  It’s a veritable symphony of color!

Each flower is artfully crafted with a specific DNA to tell it when and how to bloom. For instance, the parakeelya open their starry petals promptly at 9:30 a.m. painting the whole countryside a bright pink. Then, at 3:30 p.m. they close them again.

“How great is our God!” my heart keeps singing. “It must have given Him great pleasure to create all this beauty.” My daughter reminds me that I’m seeing just a tiny bit of it as there are over 500 different species of flowers in Western Australia.

The scene is totally amazing! When I consider the harsh conditions– very little rain, mostly sandy soil, and temperatures that hover between 30-40 degrees–I wonder how flowers can grow at all. A rose wouldn’t survive here, I know.

Then I remember: God has chosen, not only the design and program, but also the place for each flower to grow. It’s precisely because of harsh conditions these flowers do so well.

Does this principle work for us as well? I wonder. Is that why we’re called upon to go through dry seasons of the soul? Harsh circumstances that threaten to destroy us? Does God know the difficult corner we’re in? According to Jesus, He does.

“If God so clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and gone tomorrow, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?” Jesus asked. “So, do not worry…your heavenly Father knows what you need”  (Mathew 6:30-32, NIV).

And I hear God saying, “Just trust Me.”

Father, thank you that you have a plan for each of your children, plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us hope and a future.  Amen.

Questions: Where are you in your relationship with God right now?  How can you know that you can trust God in all circumstances?

What a wonderful reminder, to just trust Him. I have two boys ages 21 and 20. They are both in the military. I will see Ray (the older one) at the end of the month. But my baby, Ryan is in Germany and I won’t see him until next fall. Sometimes when I think about all this, I get anxious. But I know His word says He knows the plans HE has for us and I really do want to just trust Him. Thank you Helen for sharing this, it has lifted my spirits today. Blessings to you,

What BEAUTIFUL words of sharing today! So descriptive and touching. And, I’m sure the flowers in Australia were SOME sight to see!

Yes, our God knows JUST how to care for us, in the dry and rough spots and our faith WILL grow deeper! May Jesus have His way with me! That is the prayer of my heart today-all day walking with the Lord!!

p.s. Renee, Jesus bless your heart! May He keep you in perfect peace as your mind is stayed on Him. Bless your sons too, for serving our country SO greatly!

    Merry Christmas to all!

I have to keep reminding myself to not worry, though it is difficult at times.
The store my husband works at will close forever on Dec. 31. Since he is 62 years old, the chances of his getting another job are pretty slim. My student loan repayments begin in January, our health insurance cost will go up $100 a month starting in January, and we are hoping our our oldest daughter will go to college next fall.

Yes, I worry about how we will manage.

My team at school knows of our impending financial difficulties and collected $300 for us to use on Christmas!! I couldn’t believe it!

This is an example of how ‘not to worry’.

I’m sure something will happen soon that will make it all come out ok. It always does.

as a person experiencing a “dry season of my soul” this has really been uplifting for me. Thank you for reminding me that i need not worry about what i am going through right now but just need to put my hope and trust in Him and have faith that He knows why i am where i am today

there is nothing more profound then getting that you can “JUST TRUST HIM” when things are upside down, when things are just right and it seems strange, I have to remind myself that God HAS GOT THIS thank you for this today!

I love the way the dry spells were paraphrased in this devotional… I believe God’s children are going thru them, as well as all of His creation. God’s plan is for us to grow (like the beautiful flowers) during those “rainy gloomy days” God’s plan is much better than our own. When the rain comes, it brings us closer to His Word, and then we apply His Word, and give God the glory… and we’re nourished, and grow into beautiful flowers, perfect flowers, just as He planned. Thanks for this, I enjoyed it.

i am in a place of total acceptance about all things in my life. God’s word has convinced me that until i gave up the “not knowing” the “why’s” and all the pleading and complaining, in other words, He’s shown me how to surrender and let Him be God and do what ever needs to be done in my life. He has truly shown me that He and He ALONE can break all the chains of fear and discouragement and to bring all my worries to Him. i thank Him so very much for this victory!

You know, I never get tired of hearing about “Trusting Him”.
Helen, you described so well the beauty of those season in our lives where there is much weeping during the night. Trusting Him anchors our soul with the blessed assurance that a new day is dawning – so this is a temporary season.
We stsnd firm and sure of His faithfulness, His integrity – His love. His Son’s Blood was shed to purchase for us that “new day”.
As we go thru those dry seasons, along the path we find the air fragrant with grace, we see Him; the Sun of Righteousness beaming warm rays of hope that melts away the coldness of despair and worry. There – right there in the midst of all the flowers on that path we note the beautiful blooms of hope and peace and from the nearby River we satisfy our thirst with joy. Our hearts are glad as we realize our Never-Leaving Companion has ordered our steps to this secret place known only by those who “trust Him”.
Helen, God bless you for this truly timely and inspirational story. It really blessed my soul!
God bless all of you and Merry Chrismas!
