I was terrified. I was 15 years old and found myself with a group of students who were going out witnessing. I had never done it before. I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do, but a friend showed me “The Roman Road.” I marked up my Bible and put little bookmarks in. Our assignment was to walk around the park in pairs of two until we met someone, engage in conversation and then share the Gospel with them. It sounded simple until I actually began to consider talking to one of the people in the park.

Then I saw him.

A nice elderly gentleman was sitting on a bench relaxing. I approached him, asked him how he was doing and was just beginning to share the first step of the Gospel message with him. Suddenly he stood up, grabbed my shoulder and kissed my cheek! I didn’t know what to do so I turned and ran to our vehicle and stayed there until my friends were ready to go. I was completely convinced of one thing. I would never go street witnessing again….and I didn’t for many years.

I often felt guilty because I knew God wanted me to share the message of salvation. I love sharing great stories and newsworthy items and couldn’t figure out why I was so uncomfortable sharing the greatest message of all. It didn’t make sense to me. Then I realized that I simply didn’t know how.

If I was talking to someone, I might let it slip out that I went to church. I felt like I was sort of sharing my faith even though I knew it really wasn’t enough. Years later I had the opportunity to learn new ways of sharing my faith that I would actually use, but it always was difficult. As I got involved with Power to Change, I discovered tools that were relevant for our culture and suddenly I found I could share Christ with people.

In the last couple of years, our culture has gone through a shift where there are so many people who have never heard of a personal relationship with Jesus.
