Craving the Good Life

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 I love the word juxtaposition—to place two things or ideas side by side to see how they click and clash to make new meaning.  Today two flyers came in my mail, and their juxtaposition made […] Read More >

God is Creator, We the Created

God the Creator by John Calvin is a profound look at God’s role in creating, sustaining, and redeeming his creation, including us. “You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay!  Shall what is formed say to him, who formed it, ‘He did not make me’?  Can the pot say […] Read More >

God is Holy

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.” Revelation 4:8b Recently I heard someone complain about the over-use of the word “awesome”. “Let’s go out to McDonald’s for lunch” a friend poses. “Awesome!” someone responds. “Did you watch The Big Bang Theory last night?” a friend asks. “Yes, […] Read More >

God, Our Peace

Read David A. Leiter’s Neglected Voices: Peace in the Old Testament  “So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace.” Judges 6:24 The story of God calling Gideon to deliver his people Israel begins unceremoniously. The Midianites are bullying their way through Jewish territory routinely, taking crops, slaughtering animals, and scaring Gideon’s […] Read More >
