The Marshmallow Test

Everyone has a treat they can’t resist. Cupcakes, peanut butter cups, french fries, ice cream. We’re tempted by other things too: attractive people, drugs, sex, cheating, and gossip.

We’ve all got weaknesses. Cravings. Bad habits. It can be hard work convincing ourselves that saying ‘no’ or controlling those temptations will yield a greater reward. I wonder, do we even believe it’s true?

When these temptations are placed in front of us, most of us are are liable to forget self-control is a virtue and get ourselves into trouble. You can read about how some parents used this marshmallow test to teach their three sons an important lesson about self-control.

Destiny. Intimacy. Meaning. What do YOU crave?

If you want to connect with someone about your cravings or self control, talk to a mentor.

This is a really cool video! My pastor just talked about this last week. The story about Esau and Jacob, Esau giving up his birthright and God’s blessing. Awesome illustration about deferring instant gratification for something better!
