Advice: Divorce, Separation and Dating

Written by Dr. Ginger Gabriel, Ph.D., M.F.T

life_datingdivorceMy brother recently announced his separation shortly after told me he was dating someone. He and his wife have filed for divorce, but my family is having a hard time dealing with the fact that he is dating while he is still legally married. He wants our family to meet his new girlfriend. My question is, should we meet her or tell him that we disagree with what he’s doing and refuse? If we refuse, we won’t get to spend time with him as he won’t come to see us without bringing her along.

Advice: Tell your brother, “We will be happy to meet your new girl friend as soon as the divorce is final,” and stick with it. Try not to judge his behaviour, but stick to your own values. Invite his kids to go along with you on family events. Let him know he is welcome to come along solo, or you can invite his almost ex-wife as she will always be the mother of your nieces and nephews. You guys are doing the right thing.
