The difference between a good picture and a great one isn’t a perfect face or body – it’s knowing how to work the camera. Get the heads-up on secrets only the professionals know, just in time for the holiday season! Whether you’re posing for a company portrait or just mugging for the family, here are tips the professionals use to make every picture perfect:
- Wear solid-colored clothing. Loud prints distract; white adds pounds and can create a glare in the camera’s flash.
- Wear the same color from head to toe to appear slimmer. Also try angling your body slightly away from the camera.
- Focus on taking a deep breath just before the camera clicks, allowing it to lift your ribcage while pulling your stomach in. This flattens your tummy while perfecting your posture.
- Try to open your eyes just a little wider before the shutter snaps.
- Imagine that the camera is really someone you adore. This is a tried and true remedy for those who feel uncomfortable having their picture taken. It might take a bit of imagination, but if you can picture your grandmother in her flannel robe, or your sorority sisters with mud masks packed on, you can project an expression of warmth and affection.
- Try holding a prop if you don’t know what to do with your hands. A teddy bear, company coffee mug, or gift-wrapped package in your arms can help you relax and add interest to your snapshot.
- Avoid sampling any new makeup or skincare products the week prior to posing for an important picture. An unexpected breakout can ruin even the most camera-friendly face.
- Get plenty of rest and drink extra water the day before the picture. Exhaustion and dehydration can create shadows and lines that cameras can exaggerate.
- Consider a touch of blush, lipstick, and mascara if you don’t normally wear makeup. A strong camera flash can wash out your complexion. Choose shades that complement, not contrast, with your natural coloring.
