Just because you are low on cash doesn’t mean that you and your sweetie can’t enjoy high-quality time together. You just have to be creative in choosing activities that don’t cost much, but provide concentrated, meaningful interaction that will enrich your relationship. Why not try some of these refreshing ideas for dates that won’t strain your budget?
- Spend an afternoon dream building together. Is there some future purchase for which you are saving? Enjoy an afternoon of test driving cars, viewing model homes or window-shopping. This keeps you focused and motivated to press on toward your financial goals.
- Go to the library together. Check out books on a special topic or hobby that interests you both. Thumb through the books together over coffee at a nearby coffee shop or over a cup of tea in front of the fireplace at home.
- Put the kids to bed early and enjoy a candlelit dinner for two at home. Pull out the candles, the tablecloth and the best china. Cook a simple meal you both enjoy or try an exotic new recipe.
- Don’t let a little precipitation spoil your fun. Grab your umbrellas and go for a walk in the rain. Better yet, use one umbrella for the two of you and snuggle close as you walk.
- Go on a duck feeding expedition at a park with a lake. Take along stale bread or crackers for the ducks and a thermos of homemade lemonade or iced tea for the two of you.
- Work out as a couple. Go jogging, rollerblading or cycling in the park. Massage each other’s sore muscles later that night.
- Pack a picnic lunch and go hiking at a state park. Be sure to take along your camera to capture some photos of the time you spent together enjoying nature.
- Check the weekend edition of your local newspaper for free entertainment such as an art exhibit, concert, or craft demonstration. Or sign up for an inexpensive continuing education class on a topic that interests you both such as gourmet cooking or country line dancing.
- How long has it been since either of you put on a pair of roller skates? Take your sweetie to the roller rink for an afternoon of fun. Be sure to hold hands while you skate.
- Instead of going for dinner and a movie, go for an afternoon movie and then an early dinner. Most theaters offer special discount rates for matinees; for dinner, choose a restaurant that offers inexpensive early-bird specials.
