No More Hiding

Written by Suzanne Benner

Do you struggle with a secret sin? Temptation to sin is a constant part of our lives, but do this study to think about what your loving and forgiving God has to say to you about your secret sins.

Join us for our Daily Devotional Chat today in our Women’s Chatroom at 10:30am EST.

“But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23).

Have you been sneaking around? It could be a bad habit that you have been hiding from your family or maybe it is an attitude that has been smoldering in the deep recesses of your heart.

Little children will sometimes close their eyes or put a blanket over their head, believing that it renders them invisible. How silly, we think.

Yet, are we any different when we imagine that our thoughts or deeds go unnoticed by our Omniscient (all-knowing) God?

The Bible is clear that there is no possibility of hiding from God.

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13).

“There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known” (Luke 12:2).

God knows about our sinful behavior and attitudes; eventually others will know about them too, as the Old Testament passage reminds us.

What then, shall we do?

Let us stop hiding and cooperate with God. Ask Him to shine His light into your life to reveal the sins, evil thoughts and wrong motives that you have been hiding, so that you can confess them and turn to God.

As Paul said to the Ephesians, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” (Ephesians 5:11) and “everything exposed by the light becomes visible” (Ephesians 5:13).

We have a faithful God who longs for our repentance, forgives all our sins, cleanses us from all unrighteousness and brings us into a right relationship with Himself, so that we don’t have to hide any longer.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23, 24).

Questions: Why do we hide? What is the hardest part of coming out of hiding?

I don’t suppose there is anything more liberating than ‘being real’ and feeling loved and accepted ‘as is!’ Not that our sin should be acceptable, but that we, while under the ‘re-construction’ of the Holy Spirit, are fully known, fully loved, and fully forgiven! It frees us to grow up spiritually, as we submit to the Holy Spirit’s cleansing/purifying work in us. When we refuse to acknowledge our sin, we forfeit the joy and peace of His forgiveness and restoration, and we can find ourselves in spiritual limbo. Transparency between brothers/sisters-in-Christ encourages accountability and ministry to one another.

suzanne, thank you again for another awesome devotional.
I can only speak from experience and to the question, why one hides? Fear, ignorance, fear of the unknown, no faith. the burdens that are carried become mountainous to life in general. So in order to feel ‘safe’, retreating, isolation to cope with the loneliness is the only thing that is a safe-haven. this of course is me and this is the past tense of my life.
with God’s Word, He assures us: ”cast your burden on the LORD, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.”-Psalm 55:22
I think the hardest part of ‘coming out’ for me was pride, plain and simple. I rebelled against anything that would have me admit I was not in control of my own life—till I found myself in a pit so deep that I thought I would surely die.
I agree with you Marilyn about transparency. It’s a glorious breath of God’s air that has brought me to follow the path with Christ. I WAS that little child. I often closed off the world until one day I woke and I was truly alone. so yes, I WAS invisible, (and silly yes as I was an adult), but today I am transparent and encouraged.
Marilyn, your wisdom is so inspiring. thank you.

Thank you, kanj, for such encouraging words, but any wisdom you discern is not of me, but God’s Word shared through me! Meditating on His Word, soaking it in, and allowing it to penetrate our hearts and redefine how we ‘see’ things, is the work of the Holy Spirit in us. You, kanj, have humbly submitted to His sanctifying work, and your testimony is inspiring, a great blessing to us all! Thank you for sharing your story of ‘His story’ in your life!
