What are You Focusing On?

Written by Emmie Stanley

Are you focusing on the negative things around you? Would you like to talk to someone about that?

Join us for our Daily Devotional Chat today in our Women’s Chatroom at 10:30 am EDT.

“Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation; Preserve my life from fear of the enemy” (Psalm 64:1 (NKJV).

What you focus on, you empower. Are you thinking about everything that could go right or are you thinking about everything that can go wrong? Consider the fact that after dying on the cross Jesus stripped the enemy of all authority and all power. He no longer has any right or authority to hurt or rob us unless we give it to him by choosing to walk in fear and sin rather than faith, and expecting bad things to happen.

It really is true to say that “we have nothing to fear except for fear itself.” We are those who have been redeemed from the curse and our Father’s plans for us are for good and not for evil. That’s not to say that life’s challenges don’t happen, but we don’t need to add sorrow to our own lives by believing for and fearing the worst.  As a man thinks so he is, and what we look at is what we become. Believe the best, expect the best, focus on the goodness of God. God is love, and perfect love casts out fear.

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things.

Be  anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:8, 6-7 NKJV).

Questions: What are you focusing on? What are the things that you fear? What could you do in order to stop being anxious about things?

Emmie, thanks so much for your powerful devotional. May I quote some of your words to re-emphasize it especially in my mind?

“As a man thinks so he is, and what we look at is what we become. Believe the best, expect the best, focus on the goodness of God. God is love, and perfect love casts out fear.”

    Thanks so much and this:

That was an awesome devotion, it reassured me no matter how small the finances in our church get, God has total control and to think positive even though it’s hard and this too shall past. In order to see God in our lives something has to happen for you to trust, believe and know that He has given you all power, authority and He will supply the need. God Bless!

To God be the glory! Everytime I read a daily devo, I get so inspired. That Philippians scripture is one of my favorite. I have a habit of letting every little thing get me anxious. Stress and anxiety has a way of tearing down the body. I really needed to read this today.
    Thank you Jesus

Romans 8:28 has been a favorite scripture of mine. I have to return to it time aftre time. In ALL things, both good and bad, the Lord is working for our good in the long run. More prayer, more attention to the needs of others, more thanks, giving Him more praise and glory, I know that nothing can separate me from the Lorve of God in Christ.

  • Angie says:

God is good. Today is the day I know I have to become open to share what has happened to me in my past and share to my mother about how I was raped years ago. It has been on my heart for more than a year now, but last night I had never cried so hard in my life, I cried for hours, knowing that this needs to be done. I was deathly afraid of what may happen once I share my story, but reading this today is yet another assurance from God that HE holds me and loves me no matter what and will give me the strength to go through with this. And any other hard steps I need to take to lift this very heavy burden out of my life. If you could please pray for me as I enter this battle. I feel physically sick from crying so much and not being able to have peaceful sleep for so long. But God is bigger than that, and He will give me strength to carry through.
    Thank you..

  • DonnaL says:

  • Alice says:

Angie, you are such a strong woman and I admire your faith, tenacity and courage. I pray that God wrap his loving arms around you as you go through this and may you feel his presence.

Emmie, thank you for the devotional. Today I focus on peace within and what I do fear is that those I love that do not or will not accept Jesus Christ in their lives. I wouldn’t describe myself as ‘anxious’ as each day I let go and let God when I find myself unable to cope. I trust in the Lord to strengthen and always direct me down the right path.
