Fully Alive

She was elderly and very sweet. I was intrigued with the way she never asked, “How are you?” No, she would look you in the eye and ask, “So, what’s alive in you today?”

It’s a good question. It’s something to think on. Pause right now and ask yourself, “Where did I feel most alive today, most hopeful, most near God?”

Also ask, “Where did I feel most lifeless, most despairing and farthest from God?

Be a better steward of your memory and let it work for you as you review your day. Let it propel you onward in the good things of life.

When we pause to examine our moments of life and lifelessness in the course of a day, we can track the wind of God’s Spirit in our lives. We can train the rhythm of our hearts.

Quiet yourself and reflect on your day. When were you most alive? Most empty? What was going on in that moment?  Allow God to use your memory to draw you on. Press on to all God has for you. Allow recall to train your restlessness in the direction God wants you to go.

So far today, can you define the moment you felt most alive? Ask God to sharpen your thoughts so you can grow in the good plans He has for your life today.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (Romans 12:2, NLT).

Father God,
Thank you that Your plan for me is to be fully alive. Help me to be aware of my thoughts and to allow you to change my thinking as I draw near to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Inspired by Mark Buchanan’s book, “The Rest of God” chapter 15.

Questions: Reflect on your day today and ask yourself when did you feel most alive? When did you feel empty in your soul? Why?

This devotion sure woke me up today. It`s strange how life can get in your way,for me it meant missing a few days of devotions.Oh how I now see…My life does seem more lifeless, most desparing, and farthest from God. I sure don`t like that place.Like you said Gail about letting God transform me into a new person just by changing the way I think….nothing would please me more than to learn to know His will for me!….which is good and perfect. Romans 12:2….God is good, always!

  • Barbara says:

I feel most slive when I first wake up, grab a cup of coffee and start reading my daily devotionals and write in my journal…however, I know that I need to carry this aliveness with me all day long exspecially when I go to sleep…that is when stupid thoughts of suicide creep into my thinking…last night the thoughts were so bad I had to put my bible under my pillow in hopes that Jesus would wash away such horror from my mind. Thus, I feel most empty in my soul when I lay day at night to go to bed.

Hopefully tonight will not be the same as last night as I meditate on God’s goodness torwards me and the great plans He has for my future while I am still living….

Amen! Good thoughts to ponder and pray upon. Thank you for sharing. Giving the Lord God ALL of our minds is the biggest step toward PEACE!

  • Robin says:

Barbara, I read your comments and will be praying for your heart and mind. Jesus says this in John, chapter 10:

27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, 29 for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else.[d] No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.”

Please be encouraged today! Jesus will NEVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR let you go!!!!!!

Please comment back and keep us up to date on here. Or, reach out to a mentor on this site. Just don’t be alone in your thoughts and remember, our Jesus is holding you CLOSE. Amen!

  • Arlette says:

    Barbara,
I feel that way too!! But for me it is first thing in the morning when I wake up. I feel just as you wrote. What I do is pray scripture. Whatever verse touches you just say it over and over. For me it is often scripture about not fearing, not being anxious and about how if He cares for the sparrow how much more He cares for me. I do online searches to match my feeling to a bible verse and then use this to find comfort in the dark times. Perhaps also listening to Christian radio as you fall asleep? All of these things have helped me so much to fight back the dark thoughts. I think that the enemy uses those times when our guard is down to bring despair. But I hope you can fight back too. A simple one to say is “Fear not for I am with thee, be not dismayed for I am the Lord your God”. He does, can and will bring you peace.
I truly hope that this helps as I know just how awful it feels and I will keep you in my prayers.

  • Trisha says:

Yes…it is definately my thinking, esp negative thinking which continually makes negativity come back on me. It seems when things change around me,and i don’t like it, i find all kinds of negative things to say and do. It’s like a child rebelling against the will of thier parents. Do i think the more i complain or tear someone down it will be the way i want? i long for the LORD to transform me into His way of seeing things and to have my thoughts sharpened to the “point” (no pun intended) of pricking my conscience when i’m anyone less. Thanks for this devo~

    Dear Father in Heaven,

This evening I bring these precious ladies to You and lift them up before Your throne of Grace. We come to Your throne not because we deserve to but because You have invited us. You promise mercy and grace to help us in our time of need.

Lord, tonight I especially ask for You to bless Barbara. Cover her mind with the power of the cross of Jesus Christ and with the peace that passes all understanding. Give her scriptures as You do for Arlette and may Your word push back the destructive thoughts that try to invade their hearts and minds. Bless Trisha too and Hedy and Robin.

May the truth of Your word bring victory tonight and sweet sleep to each one of them. I ask this in the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.

Barbara and arlette anD those others who are thinking the same way. I am praying for you.

  • Em says:

Thank you for this, and all the prayers of all the sisters. I pray God’s presence is felt today. Could you kindly lift-up a prayer for my sister, E., who is struggling with postpartum depression after giving birth to her first child? I pray God touches her, and my family in deep ways that help us honor Him. God bless.

  • Robin says:

Em, I will certainly pray for your sister! And I am praying for ALL who read and/or posted on this devotional. May the Lord God continue to grant us HIS strength! He Who has called us into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ is FAITHFUL and HE WILL DO IT FOR US!!!!!!! Amen!
